We sit together,
near the water’s edge.
Your arm of protection
around me,
my head resting
near your heart.
When the waters
lap lazy,
I am able, at times,
to quiet my mind
and relax into your steady
embrace.
But when waves
of fear rise up
like threatening armies
and explode at our feet,
I too often loose all bearings
and forget that you are there.
I practice being brave,
as I learned in childhood, and steel myself against these rising hosts,
only to find myself
trembling.
Teach me that all I need to do is bury my face in your chest and speak my fear, my need, into all the love and strength
you are.
Teach me,
so I might remember
and receive again
the deep peace
your sweet comfort
always brings.
——
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
